A Must See: "When We See Us"

Hi art lovers,

This week, the internationally acclaimed exhibition When We See Us opened at Bozar in Brussels, curated by Koyo Kouoh. She is the Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, South Africa, the first venue to host the show before it began its European tour (after Brussels it travels to Stockholm!).

It was also recently announced that Koyo Kouoh will be the curator of the 2026 Venice Art Biennale, one of the most prestigious art events in the world.

I first saw When We See Us at Kunstmuseum Basel in the summer of 2024, and it was absolutely incredible. I wrote about it in one of my newsletters back then, if you missed it, you’ll find the newsletter below.

But as I was reading the exhibition text in Brussels, something caught my attention, something that wasn’t mentioned in Basel or Cape Town.

In this week’s edition for paying readers, I’ll take a closer look at what stood out to me and how it ties into the hidden power structures of the art world, a topic I’ve also explored in other newsletters.

See you next week,

Emily x

PS: Noticed a little design difference? I’m playing around with the design of the newsletter, so don’t be surprised if things keep shapeshifting over the next few weeks ;)
